Welcome into my world: The world of travel, food, fashion, lifestyle and love/empowerment
For those who do not know, I was born and raised on an island called Mombasa in Kenya. Thus, since I grew up in Africa, I was immersed into the culture of giving from a very young age. This helped me understand who I truly am and gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of life in general.
Today, as a Canadian, where my country prides itself and has held one of the top humanitarian roles in the world, I couldn't be more happier than to fulfill my dream of helping others through many resources that are available to me.
There are a number of charities that I currently support and since COVID-19, I have added more such as the Calgary Seniors' Resource Society. However, I have highlighted a few below (click on the logo to go to the website).
Feel free to donate to a worthy cause! Be it money or time, every little thing that we do counts.
WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT
I am a huge advocate for empowering women as such I believe that once they are inspired and motivated, they can achieve literally anything!
My desire for this cause comes from observing my mother, a strong and independent lady, who single-handedly raised and supported me throughout my life and career.
EDUCATE
Nelson Mandela has eloquently mentioned that "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world".
While I think we should eradicate poverty first, it is only befitting that at the same time we educate the masses to kill ignorance.
History has shown us that when we are educated, we innovate and today, with the proper education, we still have a world of unknown to discover.
DEVELOPMENT
I have been very fortunate to serve as the Vice-Chair of Marketing and Communications for the Aga Khan Economic Planning Board as a volunteer. This is an agency that falls under the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The AKDN mentions that it is dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship and building economically sound enterprises in the developing world, and I have firsthand experience with this.
Through my volunteer with them, I truly understood the notion of “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Below is a link to all agencies that fall under AKDN should you wish support this cause.
ERADICATE POVERTY
We have seen a world full of conflict and wars. People fleeing homes and as this happens, many today are thrust into poverty.
According to the UN, high poverty rates are often found in small, fragile and conflict-affected countries; their first sustainable goal is to end poverty by 2030, which we are lagging in today.
Below is a link to many of the UN agencies for e.g World Food Programme, Refugee support (UNHCR), etc. where one can help with this cause.
My belief is that once we end poverty, and people are not scrambling to just live a normal life, we can then concentrate on education (See 'Educate' section).
ORPHAN CARE
Due to wars and conflicts, we have seen a surge of children who are orphaned and also live in areas where there is lack of water and proper sanitation.
I like this charity for that purposes. They have programs such as water for life, and also reach orphans in areas where there is a dire need of essentials.
